Konopiste is a picturesque château situated in the centre of Bohemia in a homonymous village near Benesov town. Its foundation is dated back in the 13th century, built as a medieval castle by the king of Holy Roman Empire and Czech king John Luxemburg. Since that time, many aristocratic owners have changed at the castle. Its originally gothic style was rebuilt to baroque and renaissance, however all those mentioned are well seen there. What made Konopiste so well-known is the fact, that the last private owner was the Austro-Hungarian imperial successor Ferdinand d’Este, who was assassinated in Serbia, which was the official reason for starting the First World War in 1918. During the Second World War, there was the residence of the Nazi unit SS (“Schutzstafleln“). Since 1945 Konopiste is owned by the Czech ministry of culture and opened for public.
